SDGs

At ASK, we align our work with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address key challenges in Kurdistan, such as poverty, environmental degradation, and inequality. We focus especially on youth, women, and city services, aiming to create a more sustainable and equitable future for the region. Through these programs, we work toward meaningful change that benefits both the people and the environment in Kurdistan.

No poverty

1

The goal seeks to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030, defined as living on less than $1.25 per day, and reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women, and children living in poverty in all its dimensions. It focuses on creating social protection systems, ensuring equal rights to economic resources, and addressing the needs of the most vulnerable. This goal also emphasizes resilience, particularly for those affected by natural disasters and economic shocks, to break the cycle of poverty for future generations.

Zero hunger

2

This goal aims to end hunger and ensure that all people, especially the poor and vulnerable, have sufficient, safe, and nutritious food all year round. It focuses on doubling agricultural productivity and incomes for small-scale farmers, ensuring sustainable food production systems, and maintaining the genetic diversity of seeds. Reducing food waste, ensuring access to land, technology, and markets, and improving international cooperation for food security are key actions to achieve zero hunger.

Good health

3

Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being at all ages is fundamental to sustainable development. This goal covers a wide range of health-related targets, from reducing maternal and child mortality to combating diseases like AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. It also promotes mental health, substance abuse prevention, and universal health coverage, ensuring access to affordable and quality healthcare services for everyone.

Quality Education

4

This goal seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all and promote lifelong learning opportunities. It emphasizes universal primary and secondary education, affordable technical, vocational, and higher education, and eliminating gender disparities in access to education. It also focuses on increasing the number of qualified teachers and creating safe, non-violent, and effective learning environments for all.

Gender equality

Achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls is essential to advancing human development. This goal targets the elimination of discrimination, violence, and harmful practices like child marriage and female genital mutilation. It advocates for equal participation of women in political, economic, and public life, as well as ensuring access to reproductive health services, education, and economic resources.

It also focuses on protecting and restoring water-related ecosystems like rivers and wetlands, and ensuring water resources are managed sustainably.

Clean energy

7

The goal aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy for all. It highlights the need for a significant increase in renewable energy use, improved energy efficiency, and expanded infrastructure for clean energy in developing countries. It encourages global efforts to expand sustainable energy services, reduce energy waste, and invest in innovations that will make energy more accessible, particularly for low-income populations.

Decent work

8

Promoting sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all is the focus of this goal. It seeks to achieve higher levels of economic productivity, improve resource efficiency, and promote policies that encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of protecting labor rights and ensuring safe and secure working environments, particularly for women, youth, and migrant workers.

It seeks to enhance infrastructure in developing countries, support domestic technology development, and ensure that small-scale enterprises have access to financial services and markets. This goal also focuses on sustainable industrial practices that reduce environmental impact and promote the adoption of clean technologies.

Reduced inequality

10

The goal aims to reduce inequality within and among countries by ensuring equal opportunities and reducing inequalities in income, access to services, and representation. It promotes social, economic, and political inclusion regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, or income. It also emphasizes the need for global financial systems to be fair and transparent, reducing disparities in wealth distribution and improving the economic resilience of developing countries.

This goal is about making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. It focuses on ensuring access to adequate, safe, and affordable housing and basic services, improving urban planning, and reducing the negative environmental impact of cities, particularly by improving air quality and waste management. It also emphasizes the need for safe, affordable, and sustainable transportation systems, protecting the world’s cultural and natural heritage, and making cities more resilient to natural disasters. The goal promotes inclusive urbanization and the use of participatory planning to ensure that cities work for all their residents, especially vulnerable groups.

Responsible consumption

12

This goal seeks to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. It aims to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation by promoting the efficient use of resources and energy, reducing waste generation, and minimizing the environmental impact of products and services. It also encourages sustainable practices among businesses and consumers, including the reduction of food waste, environmentally sound management of chemicals, and the promotion of sustainable public procurement policies. Education on sustainability is key to achieving these objectives.

The goal aims to protect marine biodiversity, promote sustainable fisheries, and ensure that oceans remain healthy and productive for future generations. It also highlights the need to improve the management of ocean ecosystems, prevent illegal fishing, and reduce the impact of ocean acidification due to climate change.

Life on land

15

This goal seeks to protect, restore, and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, manage forests sustainably, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and biodiversity loss. It emphasizes the importance of conserving biodiversity by protecting species at risk of extinction, promoting reforestation efforts, and safeguarding natural habitats from human encroachment. This goal also stresses the need for sustainable agriculture, land-use planning, and policies to maintain ecosystems that provide essential services like clean air, water, and soil fertility.
